So I've been wanting a new car for some time now ... over a year.
I'm in love with the Yaris. Now, the Yaris is just in my price range, specifically since I'm unsure if I"ll be getting a raise anytime soon -- seeing that I won't be taking my boss's job ... but it's semi likely they might decide to do a promotion w/in my current responsibilities which I would LOVE. There is also a possibility once performance management/planning is done ... which with figuring raises and bonuses is like October.
Anyway, so my dad is getting a new car and I've been thinking more and more about it. I called an insurance company and my insurance would go DOWN if I got this new car - mostly because my current Cavalier "coupe" is considered a sports car and I would be switching companies to Liberty Mutual which gives UMASS grads an 8% discount -- the biggest discount you can get in MA!
Anyway, so yesterday I test drove a Yaris. I liked it, except the one I drove had no power locks and windows - which I want in my new car - my old car does not have them and it annoys me. The sales person said it's hard to get it/can't get it in a 2-door hatch ... but the brochure (and website) says you can. Hrm.
Now there is the Scion XA ... Not as cute looking as the Yaris, but everything comes standard (including power locks/windows) and the new models have controls for the streo on the steering wheel. Had I not been so hungry while we were at the dealership, I would have asked to test drive it as well.
I've also been looking at cheaper used cars, but if I'm going to take on a car payment, I mine as well get a car I love. I just didn't fall soo in love with the Yaris after driving it. It's a bit disappointing.
But on the other hand, I probably should wait a month or two until our finances are squared away (still have a gas bill from the other apartment, Aaron has to catch up on his bills from the lag from quitting CVS to getting this new job, etc.). So if I wait a month or two I can feel secure that I can take on this extra cost, and maybe save a few hundred bucks to go towards more of a downpayment ... or a monthly payment "just in case".
The good news is, I cleaned out my car like sparkly before going to the dealership incase I decided to go all crazy-like and buy a new car then and there and had to get my trade in appraised.

Man, that sucks that the Yaris was so disappointing. You'd think that by now, power locks/windows would be standard on anything. Only downside about Scions is that they will not negotiate price. Sticker price is what you get no matter what. I was all set on an Xa but it was too expensive at the time and the dealer said Scion does not compromise on their prices. So I got the reliable (i.e., boring) Sentra instead. But the Xa was MASSIVE fun, so you'll probably fall in love with it like the Yaris.
I am so calling up liberty mutual and asking them for my 8% discount!

Unfortunately 2006 was the last of the xa ... so we'll see. There are still brand new ones available - since you can still buy both 06 and 07 models, but if i'm not ready to buy RIGHT NOW i don't know what will be available when i am. But, that also means that maybe I can get a used one.

I think the xa was one of the more popular scions ... better than that boxy one - which they just redesigned - my dad bought one.

The Xb is kind of weird looking...and I always get it confused with the Honda Element. How is the redesigned one?

The XB looks like they squished it. Kind of like the Chevy HHR.

The odometer is in the center on the Yaris too. It's really strange - but it's not bad once you get used to it.
